Chapter 8
Kate
We arrived at the Lockheart Diner without delay but with one sore jaw. The town of twenty-five, plus a few extra guests, were all seated around a U-shaped wooden table, clinking their glasses of wine to make toasts. I made a beeline for Charlie, who was sitting beside Evie.
“Dr. Lockheart—”
“Kate, is everything all right?”
“No, Cameron has a small problem. He needs your help. He’s in the hallway at the front.”
Charlie stood up and excused himself from the table. I was about to follow him, but Evie stopped me. “What’s wrong with Cameron?”
“He has a locked jaw, and I’ve been teasing him so much on the way down the hill that I’m pretty sure he’s sick of me too.”
I foresaw plenty more blowjobs on the horizon to make it up to him, but I couldn’t help it. He sounded funny when he tried to speak between his teeth, though I could only imagine his pain. The more I thought about it, the worse I felt about teasing him.
“How did he lock his jaw?” she asked.
“Ahm… it just happened.”
I wasn’t about to tell her that it was during what appeared to be a strong orgasm, and so I ignored Evie’s question and followed Charlie out into the hallway, where he began feeling Cameron’s jaw bone with his fingers.
“If this doesn’t work, you’re going to have to go to the hospital.”
Cameron nodded.
“Is it going to hurt him?” I asked.
“It’s not going to be pleasant. Ready?” Charlie asked.
Cameron nodded again, but I saw doubt in his eyes.
“One, two, three…”
Cameron released a loud and painfully horrid yelp, and my heart broke in half.
Evie burrowed her long nails into my arm.
“Ouch!” I gasped.
“Oopsies. Sorry.”
“Did it work?” I asked, watching as Cameron held the tears full of pain in the corners of his eyes.
“No. He needs a stronger muscle relaxant than what I have on me. I’ll need to take him to the hospital.”
“I’m coming with you.”
“Ho,” he replied.
“Cameron — “
He gave me a warning look, and I knew that I had no say in the matter. It was safer to stay here.
“All right. I’ll stay. Please call Silvia or Marianne when you know something.”
“Don’t worry, Kate. I’ll make sure they’re okay.” Evie hugged me tightly as if we’d been the best of friends since birth.
“You’re going?” I asked, but she ignored me as Cameron yelped out in pain again. We all jumped up at the sound.
“Is it the jaw?” Charlie asked. Cameron shook his head and pointed to his stomach.
“All right, ladies. I’m going to need some space to examine him. Lie down on the floor for me.”
Concerned, I pulled Evie aside. “Evie, you’re going with Dr. Lockheart?”
“Don’t worry, Kate. I know where your mind is going, and I can assure you that I’m not interested in Cameron, if you know what I mean.” She wiggled her brows as if that were our secret code. “We were going to leave in the morning, but now that Cameron’s hurt, I guess it makes sense to head out tonight.
